Tier 1: unable to continue in current role or any gainful employment up to 65 – membership + 100% notional membership from leave date to age 65
Tier 2: unable to continue in current role but will have gainful employment before 65 – membership + 25% notional membership from leave date to age 65
Tier 3 – If you are unable to continue in your current role but capable of obtaining gainful employment within a reasonable period, you will be awarded benefits accrued to date with no enhancements. Once you are re-employed, the pension will be stopped and you will be classed as a deferred pensioner. You will have the option for your pension to go back into pay on your 60th birthday.
If you have worked part-time during your membership in the Scheme, the enhancement to your service may be pro-rated to reflect your part-time hours.
For those of you who are aged 45 + by 31st March 2008, there is a protection in place so that you won’t lose out on any enhancement because of the new Scheme. You will either receive an enhancement based on the new tiered system or based on how enhancements were calculated pre April 2008 – whichever is the most beneficial to you. The pre April 2008 enhancements are shown in the table below.
Total Membership | Total Membership After Increase Awarded |
Less than 5 years | Actual total membership only |
Between 5 and 10 years | Total membership doubled |
Between 10 and 13 1/3 years | Total membership increased to 20 years |
Between 13 1/3 years and 33 1/3 years | Total membership by 6 2/3 years |
Between 33 1/3 and 40 years | Total membership increased to 40 years |
Over 40 years | Actual total membership only |
Your increased membership, however, must not exceed the total membership you would have accrued had you continued in employment until age 65. |
